Proposed Traditional Research Component
The Holocaust was a dark period in the history of the world. Death, destruction, and fear were felt by peoples in and outside of Eastern Europe. In spite of the uncertainty and mass brutality, some people are still alive to tell of their experiences. As our primary text is Night by Elie Wiesel, this research component will require students to read a novel of their own choosing by a Holocaust survivor. This research component will be in the form of a 4-5 page "book report" and research paper.
Students will be address in their paper the following essential questions:
Paper Rubric - 100 points
Students will be address in their paper the following essential questions:
- Who is/are the main character[s]?
- What were their circumstances before the Nazi takeover of Eastern Europe?
- How were they "notified" about what was going to happen to them?
- How does their experience compare to that of Elie Wiezel's experience in Night? Focus on the type of language used to describe these events.
- What did they learn from their experiences in the ghettos and/or concentration camps? What were their attitudes towards Germans? What was their attitude about themselves?
- How is/was their life following their experiences of the Holocaust? What is the "takeaway" message of the book?
